Dress Professionally and Land the Job!
Proven Successful Tips from Sonja and Lesli
Women:
- Select a skirted suit, pantsuit or conservatively tailored dress.
- Select blouses or sweaters that coordinate well with your suit.
- Wear 1½” to 2” dress shoes or pumps in colors that avoid making your feet a focal point.
- Always wear hose to interviews. Carry an extra pair in case of runs.
- Perfume should be used in moderation – never too strong or overpowering. A fragrance may cause an allergic reaction or offend the interviewer. When in doubt, go without.
- Use natural-looking makeup and clear nail polish. This keeps the focus on the interview.
- Do not carry a purse with a briefcase. Choose one or the other.
- Add accessories to express your personality and accentuate your best features.
Men:
- The most acceptable colors for men’s suits are black, dark blue, gray, and brown. Suits, including tie and dress shirt, should be properly tailored and dry cleaned.
- Always wear a white, cream, or blue shirt. Make sure the shirt is pressed.
- A silk tie makes the most powerful professional impression. Your tie should complement your suit and be conservative.
- Wear leather shoes in black or brown. Shoes should be shined and match your belt.
- Socks should be in a dark color and complement the suit. Don’t wear athletic socks.
- Accessories should be kept to a minimum; e.g., no more than one ring on each hand; a dress watch is appropriate.
- Cologne should be used in moderation – never too strong or overpowering. A fragrance may cause an allergic reaction or offend the interviewer. When in doubt, go without.
Common Sense Tips:

- Remove facial and body piercings.
- Cover visible tattoos to avoid distraction.
- Make sure your hair is clean and conservative in color and style.
- You should reflect the image of the company with which you are interviewing in appearance.
- Less is more. Keep your look simple until you become accustomed to the environment and learn about the company’s dress code.
